Hunter sits hunched at his desk, pencil tapping nervously as he crafts the words of his secret admirer letter. His cheeks flush with determination and hope as he seals the letter in an envelope, carefully writing "Harper" in bold, looping script across the front.
"Maybe today is the day she finds out how I feel," he whispers to himself, slipping the envelope into his backpack and heading out the door.
Hunter walks with purpose, weaving through the crowd of students. He stops at his locker, glancing around, then carefully places the envelope inside, tucking it between a stack of notebooks. The bell rings, and he hurries to class, his mind racing.
During recess and lunch, Hunter munches on a sandwich and sips water, barely tasting his food as he imagines what might happen if Harper ever reads his letter.
Hunter opens his locker and gathers scraps of paper and an old magazine, tossing the rubbish into a nearby bin. He notices the magazine, its glossy cover peeking out from the trash, and retrieves it. The envelope, untouched and still bearing Harper's name, is slipped between the magazine's pages.
"No one will ever know," he mutters, clutching the magazine tightly as he leaves the building.
Hunter tosses the magazine onto the floor and cracks open a can of soda, gulping it down. Peter, his curious friend with unruly hair and a mischievous grin, snatches up the magazine, flipping through its pages.
"Hey, give that back!" Hunter calls out, launching his empty soda can towards Peter, who laughs and ducks.
Hunter and Peter chat about girls, money, and their dream jobs, their voices rising and falling in excitement. Suddenly, Alexander, tall and brash with a quick wit, snatches the magazine from Peter.
"This magazine’s for looking at women, not reading boring stuff," Alexander insists, shaking the magazine until the hidden envelope flutters to the floor.
Alexander picks up the envelope, grinning as Hunter nervously reaches for it.
"Give it back, Alexander!" Hunter pleads, but Alexander tears open the envelope, pulling out the letter and tossing the empty envelope to Hunter, who throws it to the floor in frustration.
Peter grabs the letter and reads it aloud, his voice booming. "Whoa, who wrote this? It’s for Harper!"
Hunter snatches the letter back, cheeks burning, and stammers, "I... I wrote it. For Harper."
Alexander laughs and snatches the letter from Hunter, dramatically reading its heartfelt words out loud for all to hear.
