Eli and Mason, both fourteen, give each other a nervous glance as they hesitate before joining the crowd. The unique texture of their wrestling singlets clings to their skin, a stark contrast from the usual swim trunks worn by everyone else. Their hearts race not just from the anticipation of swimming, but from the thrill—and anxiety—of standing out.
"Are you sure this was a good idea, Eli?"
"Come on, Mason, it's different. Plus, Coach always says these are made for movement. Maybe we'll swim faster," Eli replies, trying to sound confident, though his voice wavers.
Mason pulls his towel tighter around his waist, self-conscious as a group of teenagers glance their way. Eli, determined to act unfazed, drops his towel and strides confidently to the pool's edge. The sunlight highlights the bright blue and gold of his singlet against his skin.
"If we act like it's normal, maybe no one will care," Eli whispers.
"Easy for you to say. I can barely keep my cool," replies Mason, his cheeks flushed.
Eli surfaces first, shaking water from his hair, and tries to focus on swimming laps. Mason joins, but keeps glancing around, tugging at his singlet to hide his discomfort. The tight fabric makes them more aware of every movement, fueling both exhilaration and embarrassment.
"I feel like everyone can tell we're not wearing trunks," Mason mutters, glancing toward the pool steps where a group of girls is watching.
"Just swim. The water feels great, right? No one cares as much as we think," Eli replies, though his confidence falters as he notices more eyes on them.
Jake[/@ch_3], approaches, curiosity in his eyes.]
Jake, a classmate and fellow swimmer, grins as he spots the unusual outfits. "Whoa, rocking the wrestling look? Didn't know it was swim day and not match day," he jokes, nudging Mason's shoulder.
"We just wanted to try something different," Mason mumbles, glancing at Eli for support.
"Honestly, it's not half bad for swimming," Eli says, voice steadier as he tries to shrug off the awkwardness.
Eli wins a race and pumps his fist in the air, water droplets sparkling in the sun. Mason laughs, finally letting go of his self-consciousness and diving after his friend. Around them, the pool’s energy surges, and the boys blend in, their unique attire becoming just another part of the summer scene.
"Next time, I'm bringing my headgear too," Mason jokes, and both boys burst into laughter, the tension of the day finally washing away.
Eli tosses a pebble into the pool and watches the ripples spread. Mason sits beside him, both boys savoring the last moments of daylight and the memory of a day they dared to be different.
"You know, today was actually awesome," Eli says quietly.
"Yeah. Next time, let’s see what else we can pull off," Mason grins, already imagining their next adventure.
