Jack walked through the glass doors of the fast food joint, his blue eyes scanning the crowded space. His dirty blond hair was tousled, a testament to the rushed morning he'd had. He adjusted the brim of his cap, a nervous anticipation bubbling within him. "Alright, first day," he murmured, trying to muster confidence.
Marlene, the seasoned cook, glanced at Jack with a mixture of amusement and pity. "Just remember, kid, if you mess up, you eat up," she chuckled, flipping a burger expertly. Jack nodded, trying to focus on the task at hand. The register beeped with a new order, and he fumbled with the buttons, anxiety rising.
The first error was a cheeseburger without cheese. He sighed as he stared at the forlorn sandwich, his stomach already full from previous blunders. "Here goes nothing," he said, taking a bite. With each mistake, his waistline seemed to expand just a little more, the uniform growing tighter around his once lean frame. Jack’s weight gain happened gradually but enough to leave noticeable stretch marks across his sides and abdomen. Each day, he became more anxious about his changing body; his arms, once toned, were now softer, and his cheeks had begun to fill out, creating a rounded appearance. The snugness of his uniform left little to the imagination, making him conscious of every glance from customers.
Ben, a fellow cashier, approached with a sympathetic smile. "Hey, don't sweat it. Everyone's got a rough start," he reassured, handing Jack a soda. "Thanks," Jack replied, grateful for the camaraderie. Not realising that his coworkers were only further enabling his weight gain.
Jack wiped down the counters, determination etched on his face, though inwardly he was conflicted. As he bent to pick up a fallen fry, he felt the seams of his older uniform strain dangerously. Suddenly, with a loud rip, the fabric gave way, leaving him completely exposed in front of a group of giggling customers. His face turned crimson as laughter erupted. Marlene rushed over, trying to contain her amusement while offering him a jacket to cover up. "Looks like it's time for a new size, huh?" she teased gently, but Jack's heart sank at the realization of how far things had changed.
His weight gain was continuous. Every bite he took felt like a reminder of his struggle, and as he looked at his reflection in the kitchen's stainless steel, seeing the obese face that stared back, with its multiple chins, tied to a body with a massive chest and sagging belly.
Jack’s journey at "Speedy Bites" had become a cycle of mistakes and discomfort. There was no happy ending for him, just the realization that he was bound to get fatter and fatter every day, till he couldn't work anymore.
