Annie Carlson sat on the gym bench, her legs extended awkwardly in front of her. The sneakers she wore were so large that they seemed to belong to a mythical giant rather than a high school student. "I can't believe I'm wearing these," she muttered, trying to wiggle her toes.
Katie Brassue, with her long, auburn hair tied back in a ponytail, approached Annie with a friendly smile. "Hey, Annie! Looks like we're in the same boat," she chuckled, pointing at her own enormous Nike sneakers. "I never thought I'd meet someone with bigger feet than mine," Annie replied with a laugh.
Katie knelt beside Annie, gently taking one of her legs in hand. "Let's get these legs moving," she encouraged, beginning to stretch Annie's stiff muscles. "Thanks, Katie. I feel like a tin man that forgot his oil can," Annie joked, trying to relax into the stretch.
Annie and Katie exchanged stories of how they ended up with the colossal footwear. "Turns out, my brother dared me to wear these for a week," Katie explained. "Mine was a bet with the track team. I lost, obviously," Annie added, shaking her head in mock exasperation.
Annie wiggled her feet, feeling the stretch in her legs ease the stiffness. "I think I'm getting used to these," she said, offering Katie a grateful smile. "Who knows, maybe we'll start a new trend," Katie suggested, grinning as she tied her sneaker laces.
As they gathered their belongings, Annie and Katie walked side-by-side, their footsteps echoing in the now-empty gym. "Same time tomorrow?" Annie asked, glancing at her friend. "Wouldn't miss it for the world," Katie replied, their laughter trailing behind them as they exited into the cool evening air.
