Eli and Marcus, both fourteen, rummage through drawers for their wrestling singlets, grins plastered on their faces. The room smells faintly of detergent and sunscreen, a harbinger of summer days. Outside, the distant sound of lawnmowers and children laughing drifts through the open window, adding to the excitement bubbling inside.
"Are you sure about this, Marcus? People might stare,"
"That’s the point, Eli! It’ll be epic. Everyone always wears trunks—let’s be different for once."
Marcus pulls his red and black singlet over his head, the fabric snug and familiar, while Eli slides into his green and gold one, adjusting the straps with a nervous laugh. Their reflections shimmer with anticipation, hair still damp from quick showers. The air is thick with the scent of chlorine tablets and the tang of excitement.
"You know, these actually feel way cooler than trunks,"
"Told you! Plus, they make us look like superheroes. Ready to turn some heads?"
Eli and Marcus stride through the gate, towels slung over their shoulders, their singlets catching curious glances from other swimmers. The lifeguard, perched atop a high chair, raises an eyebrow with a half-smile. A group of younger kids pause mid-cannonball, gawking at their bold outfits.
"Look at everyone staring, Eli. I think we’re officially the main event,"
"Let’s give them a show," he replies, a playful spark in his eye.
They leap in with synchronized splashes, laughter bubbling up as they surface. The unique feel of the singlets underwater makes every kick and flip feel different, almost like swimming in a superhero costume. A few kids cheer, others giggle, and even the lifeguard lets out a chuckle.
"Bet no one else has the guts to wear these,"
"We’re trendsetters now. Next week, everyone’ll be in singlets,"
They trade stories about wrestling matches and dream up new pool games, basking in their newfound confidence. Parents nearby chat, some amused, others shaking their heads with a smile. Eli tosses a water bottle to Marcus, both of them feeling like they pulled off something legendary.
"Best idea ever, Eli. Next time, maybe capes?"
"Only if you promise not to try a suplex in the shallow end," he laughs.
Eli and Marcus gather their things, glancing back at the pool with satisfied grins. The day lingers in their memories like the warmth of the pavement beneath their feet. As they walk home, they already make plans for their next bold adventure, knowing this summer is theirs to define.
