Lord Wellington, in his immaculate tuxedo, boasted about his vast estate to an enraptured audience, while Madame DuPont, draped in pearls, regaled others with tales of her latest Parisian escapade.
Professor Elbert, an eccentric inventor, approached the gathering with a mischievous twinkle in his eye.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," he declared, gesturing to a curious contraption beside him. "A glimpse into the future, courtesy of my Timey, the time travel machine!"
[@ch_1]Lord Wellington[/@ch_1_d]"What a marvelous invention! Imagine the possibilities!"[/@ch_1_d]
Madame DuPont adjusted her hat, a mixture of excitement and skepticism on her face.
"I do hope we return in time for dinner," she quipped, as the doors closed with a soft hiss.
The time travelers stumbled out of the machine, their elegant attire starkly out of place against the bleak backdrop. Lord Wellington squinted at the horizon, his bravado quickly fading.
"This can't be right," he muttered, glancing around in disbelief.
Madame DuPont looked at her companions, her voice tinged with desperation.
"We must find food and shelter," she urged, her Parisian charm now replaced by practicality.
[@ch_1]Lord Wellington[/@ch_1_d]"I refuse to sully myself with such menial tasks,"[/@ch_1_d] he protested, though hunger gnawed at his resolve.
Lord Wellington fashioned a makeshift crown from twigs, declaring himself ruler of the wasteland, while Madame DuPont attempted to barter with imaginary merchants, offering her pearls in exchange for sustenance. Their antics, once a source of dignity, now seemed comical against their dire circumstances.
Madame DuPont sighed, her elegance shattered as she glanced at Lord Wellington.
"We have no choice," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind.
Professor Elbert, who had remained silent, finally spoke, his tone a mix of apology and amusement.
"Perhaps this experience will teach us something about ourselves," he mused, as the once-elite figures reluctantly accepted their fate, their laughter echoing across the barren land.
