Ethan sat at a corner café, his eyes scanning the passing pedestrians. He adjusted his tie nervously, glancing at his watch. Oliver, his best friend, was late, as usual. The café's warm interior buzzed with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the low hum of conversations.
"I thought I'd find you here," Oliver said, sliding into the seat across from Ethan with a grin. His tousled hair and casual attire were a stark contrast to Ethan's neat appearance.
"Sorry, got caught up at work. So, what's the plan?"
Ethan hesitated, then took a deep breath. "I know this sounds crazy, but what if we got married? Just for the benefits," he suggested, his voice barely above a whisper.
Oliver blinked, surprised. "You're serious?" he asked, searching Ethan's eyes for any sign of a joke.
"Think about it," Ethan urged. "We both need the health coverage, and it'll help us save on taxes. Plus, we're best friends. Who better to do this with?"
Oliver considered the idea, weighing the practicality against the bizarre nature of the situation. Finally, he nodded slowly. "Alright, let's do it. But only if we promise to keep things as normal as possible," he agreed, a mischievous twinkle in his eye.
Ethan laughed, relief washing over him. "Deal. Nothing changes between us," he assured, extending his hand across the table to seal the agreement.
Jessica, their competitive coworker, watched Ethan and Oliver with a keen eye, suspecting something was amiss. Determined to get ahead, she had been vying for the same benefits package.
"I heard some interesting gossip about you two," Jessica remarked, her tone dripping with curiosity as she approached them at the break room.
Oliver exchanged a glance with Ethan, both feigning innocence. "Oh, just some exciting life changes," he replied with a nonchalant shrug.
"Do you ever think about what people say? About us, I mean," Ethan asked, his voice thoughtful as he stared at the ceiling.
Oliver turned to him, a playful smile tugging at his lips. "Only that we're secretly in love," he teased, nudging Ethan gently.
But as the laughter faded, a comfortable silence settled between them, the unspoken truth lingering in the air.
Ethan took a deep breath, his heart pounding. "Ollie, what if... what if there's more to this?" he finally admitted, his voice laced with vulnerability.
Oliver turned to face him, his expression softening. "I've been thinking the same thing," he confessed, reaching for Ethan's hand.
As they stood under the starry sky, the city bustling below them, they realized that their friendship had indeed blossomed into something deeper, something unexpected and wonderful.
