Alice kept her head down, her fingers trembling as she doodled quietly. She flinched at every sound from the hallway, aware that peace in this house was always fragile. Even the gentle rain outside seemed gentler than the words she often heard.
Alice’s Mother crossed her arms, her tone sharp. "Why do you always hide away? You’re never going to change if you keep sulking like this."
Alice’s Father shook his head, barely glancing at Alice. "You’re not even trying. Look at yourself. Is this how you want to be?"
Alice felt her throat tighten, words forming but lost before they reached her lips.
A group of girls whisper as she passes, their eyes lingering too long. Maya, a classmate with a bright smile, glances sympathetically at Alice but says nothing. Alice’s heartbeat quickens as she slips into her classroom, searching for a safe corner.
Maya approaches, her voice gentle. "Hey, Alice. Do you want to sit together? I saw you looked sad earlier."
Alice hesitates before nodding, her lips curving into the smallest smile.
Alice traces her words, imagining a future where she is braver, stronger, and kinder to herself. The silence is gentle now, and she draws a deep breath, feeling the weight begin to lift.
"Thank you for being here, Maya. I think... I’m ready to try,"
"You’re never alone, Alice. I’m always here,"
With each step, Alice feels a little lighter, the world opening to the possibility of happiness.
