Maya stood by the window, her eyes tracing the swirling leaves outside. James, her father, paced the living room, while Linda, her mother, sat on the couch, clutching a mug of tea. The news of the approaching storm had left their family on edge.
"We should have been more prepared," Maya said, turning to face her parents.
"You're right, Maya," James admitted, running a hand through his hair. "But where do we even start?" Linda added, a hint of worry in her voice.
Maya looked at her parents with determination. "We need a 'go bag' ready for emergencies. Let's list what we really need," she suggested.
James nodded, pulling out his phone to look up essential items. "Flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit..." Linda chimed in, "Don't forget water and non-perishable food."
Together, they brainstormed, their list growing with each suggestion. Maya felt a sense of purpose as they worked together, her parents' trust in her guidance evident.
Maya found an old backpack and began filling it with supplies from their list. James rummaged through a toolbox, pulling out a flashlight and extra batteries. Linda, meanwhile, gathered canned goods and bottled water from the pantry.
"It's amazing how much we already have," Linda remarked, handing a can to Maya.
"We just needed to organize it," Maya replied with a smile.
James looked at his daughter with pride. "Maya, you really took the lead on this. Thank you," he said.
Linda nodded in agreement, "Yes, we're lucky to have you looking out for us."
Maya felt warmth spread through her chest, their words meaning more than she expected. "We make a good team," she said, her voice filled with affection.
Maya stood in the doorway, looking out at the clear sky. Linda joined her, slipping an arm around her shoulders. "We should keep this tradition, always ready for whatever comes," she suggested.
James joined them, nodding. "And maybe add a few things along the way," he added with a grin.
"Definitely," Maya agreed, feeling a newfound strength in their unity.
As they enjoyed their meal, Maya realized that through this experience, they had not only prepared for an emergency but had also discovered the hidden strengths within their family.
"I'm glad we did this," Maya said, her eyes meeting those of her parents.
James and Linda nodded in agreement, their smiles reflecting the love and resilience that would carry them through any storm.
