Leila grips the strap of her backpack, watching as others laugh and greet old friends. She moves carefully through the crowd, her heart pounding, trying to ignore the ache of loneliness that settles in her chest.
Ms. Carter, the teacher, offers a gentle smile. "We’re happy to have you here, Leila. Why don’t you sit next to Maya? She’ll help you settle in."
Maya, a girl with dark curls and a bright scarf, gives a small, encouraging wave.
Maya spots Leila and beckons her over. "Hey, Leila! Come sit with us. I want you to meet Aisha and Ben."
Aisha, shy but smiling, and Ben, who wears a superhero T-shirt, scoot aside to make room.
"That’s so cool! I never knew people played games like that," Ben says with wide eyes.
Leila feels warmth spread through her, her loneliness slowly giving way to hope.
"I’m really glad you’re here, Leila," Maya says, offering a genuine smile. "If you ever need anything, I’m just a text away."
Leila smiles back, heart lighter than it’s been since her arrival.
Leila writes about her first friend in this new place, the fear that faded, and the kindness that found her when she needed it most. She closes her journal, ready for tomorrow, and finally feels at home.
