Lila sat by the window, her eyes focused on the raindrops racing each other down the glass. Inside, silence was only broken by the occasional clatter from the next room, a reminder of the absence of warmth and affection. Her parents were always using some form of illegal substance her father was abusive towards her mother and her mother frequently slept with different men not to mention the multiple tattoos all over her body. Having three other siblings younger than myself who I care for with little or no input from my parents at the tender age of 7 I find it daunting but I have to care for my younger siblings. One day I will grow up, get my own house, and take all my siblings with me."Will they ever notice I'm gone?" she whispered to herself, her voice swallowed by the emptiness.
Lila stepped out hesitantly, clutching a small suitcase. She was removed from the home with her siblings by social services as her parents neglected them so badly the social worker was called by a neighbour. Social services had it difficult to place all the children in one foster home so they were separated and Lila was taken to her new foster mother after a few weeks. Her eyes met those of Maggie, her new foster mother, whose warm smile was as inviting as the cosy home behind her. "Welcome, Lila. I've been waiting for you," Maggie said, her voice a gentle embrace. Lila nodded but kept her distance, unsure of this new world of kindness.
As Lila is not used to anyone being nice to her she was rude and did not want much to do with her new foster mother, she was also missing her siblings and always ran away from her new mother's care in search of her siblings. Lila pushed the plate away, her expression defiant. Maggie watched her with patient eyes. "You can't make me eat them," Lila declared, crossing her arms. "That's okay, dear. But they're here if you change your mind," Maggie replied softly, not needing to win this battle but showing her love was unconditional.
Lila sat beside Maggie on the couch, a book open between them. "Can we read this one tonight?" she asked, her voice tentative but hopeful. "Of course, Lila. It's one of my favorites too," Maggie answered, wrapping an arm around Lila's shoulders. Slowly, the walls Lila had built began to crumble, replaced by the warmth of acceptance.
Lila sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the ultrasound photo in her hand. She felt the weight of the world on her shoulders, her heart a mix of fear and determination. Her phone lay silent beside her, a reminder of the boyfriend who had walked away. "I thought... we were forever," she murmured, her voice cracking.
Lila stood at Maggie's doorstep, her heart pounding with a mix of anxiety and hope. Maggie opened the door, her eyes lighting up with love and understanding. "Maggie, I... I'm going to be a mother," Lila confessed, tears brimming in her eyes. "Oh, my dear Lila," Maggie replied, enveloping her in a hug that spoke of unwavering support, "We'll face this together."
