Emma stood alone by the swings, her eyes downcast as she shuffled her feet in the dirt. The sound of laughter from a nearby group made her glance up, but the sight of Jared and his friends approaching made her heart sink.
"Look who's all by herself again," Jared sneered, his tone dripping with mockery. Emma felt her cheeks flush, but she squared her shoulders, trying to ignore the sting of his words.
Maya, a kind-hearted classmate, approached with a reassuring smile. "Hey, Emma, want to come sit with us?" she offered, her voice warm and sincere.
Emma hesitated, then nodded gratefully. Liam, another friend, patted the bench beside him. "We've got your back," he assured her.
Emma felt a flicker of confidence ignite within her. She stood taller, knowing she wasn't alone. "Thanks, guys. I really needed this," she said, her voice steady.
Emma walked home with Maya and Liam, their laughter filling the evening air. For the first time in a long while, she felt hopeful about tomorrow.
