Lila shifted nervously in her seat, her eyes flitting from the window to the familiar face across from her. Maya smiled, sensing something was on Lila's mind. "Maya, there's something I need to tell you," Lila began, her voice barely a whisper over the clinking of cups around them.
Maya leaned in, her curiosity piqued. "You know you can tell me anything, Lila," she replied, offering reassurance with a gentle nod. Lila took a deep breath, her fingers tracing the rim of her coffee cup. "I’m… I’m not just your ordinary friend," she confessed. "I have powers, Maya. I can stretch, bend, and twist in ways you wouldn't believe. I’m... I’m an elastic superheroine."
"You're joking, right?" Maya asked, though a part of her knew from Lila's serious tone that this was no joke. Lila shook her head, a sad smile tugging at her lips. "I wish I were. It’s been a secret for so long, and it’s been tearing me apart," Lila admitted, her eyes pleading for understanding.
Lila continued, "Every day, I have to balance saving people with staying under the radar. It’s exhausting, and I’ve been terrified of how this secret would affect us." Maya listened intently, her mind racing. "Lila, why didn’t you tell me sooner?"
Lila sighed, relief mingling with uncertainty. "I was afraid, Maya. Afraid of what you’d think, afraid of losing you," she answered. Maya reached across the table, taking Lila's hand in hers. "You won’t lose me. We’ll figure this out together," she promised, her voice firm and reassuring.
Lila smiled, a genuine warmth spreading through her. "Thank you, Maya. I don’t know what I’d do without you," she said softly. Maya grinned, squeezing Lila's hand. "You’ll never have to find out," she replied, sealing their friendship with a bond stronger than any secret.
