Ali was deep in thought, his mind filled with dreams of medical school, when Saeed, his best friend, approached. Saeed's appearance had changed; his eyes held a restless energy, and the faint smell of smoke lingered around him. "Hey, Ali, want to take a break? I've got something that'll help you relax," Saeed suggested casually, revealing a pack of cigarettes. Ali hesitated, memories of his promise to his sick mother flashing before him. "No, thanks. I promised my mom I'd stay away from that stuff," he replied, his voice firm.
Saeed tried again to persuade his friend, "Come on, Ali. Just once. It’ll make you feel better amidst all this pressure," he urged, desperation creeping into his voice. Ali shook his head, feeling the weight of his sister's warnings. Laila had noticed Saeed's change and had warned him about continuing the friendship if things didn't improve. "I can't, Saeed. I need to stay focused," Ali said, his conviction unwavering.
Saeed had started stealing money, his dependency growing more evident. Ali watched helplessly as Saeed distanced himself from family and friends. The laughter that once echoed through their conversations was replaced by tense silences. Ali felt torn between loyalty to his friend and the reality of Saeed's dangerous path.
Ali approached quietly, his heart heavy with concern. "Saeed, this has to stop. You're losing yourself," he pleaded, kneeling beside his friend. Saeed looked up, his eyes glossy with tears. "I thought I could control it, Ali. But now, I don't know how to stop," he confessed, his voice barely audible over the rain.
"It's not too late, Saeed. We can get through this together," Ali promised, his voice filled with resolve. Saeed, though hesitant, nodded, a flicker of hope rekindled in his eyes. Together, they walked away from the curb, leaving the shadows of addiction behind.
Laila met them at the apartment entrance, her face etched with worry that melted into relief. "I knew you could help him, Ali," she said, embracing her brother. Ali smiled, feeling the strength of their bond. Together, they faced the challenges ahead, united by friendship and hope for a brighter future.
