Drew stared at the reflection, feeling the unfamiliar fabric of the shorts and tank top. The ensemble felt foreign against his skin, and he couldn't quite recognize the person staring back at him. "I can do this," he whispered to himself, trying to muster some semblance of confidence.
As Drew walked in, eyes turned towards him, some filled with curiosity, others with thinly veiled amusement. He kept his head high, trying to ignore the whispers that followed him like a shadow. Maya, a girl he recognized from his science class, approached with a kind smile. "Hey, Lucy, right? I'm Maya. Want to sit with me at lunch?"
Drew sat across from Maya, grateful for the friendly gesture. "Thanks for inviting me," he said, feeling a bit more at ease. "No worries," Maya replied, her eyes sparkling with sincerity. "It's brave what you're doing."
During math class, Mr. Thompson, the math teacher, called on Drew. He froze for a moment, feeling the weight of the room's attention. Gathering his thoughts, he answered the question with a steady voice. "Well done, Lucy," Mr. Thompson nodded approvingly, moving on without a second glance.
Drew found a spot under a tree, feeling the cool bark against his back. Today had been challenging, yet unexpectedly enlightening. Sam, a classmate, joined him, sitting down with a thoughtful expression. "You know, people can be really supportive when you least expect it," Sam mused. "Yeah," Drew replied, nodding in agreement.
Drew walked home, the day's events playing through his mind. He realized that while wearing Lucy's clothes had been a challenge, it had also opened his eyes to the strength of empathy and the unexpected kindness of others. "Maybe tomorrow won't be so bad," he thought, a slight smile playing on his lips.
