Seth navigated the chaos of the middle school hallway, his heart pounding as a flurry of emotions swirled within him. The laughter of his peers from his wrong answer in class echoed in his head as the heat of shame and embarrassment rose through his body. It felt like a storm he couldn't control, each emotion crashing like waves against the shore, leaving him breathless and overwhelmed. He longed for a moment of peace, a place to sort through and understand these feelings that seemed to consume him.
One afternoon, seeking solace from the turmoil within, Seth went for a walk in the woods near his house. Trudging through the fallen leaves, Seth followed the faint sound of water toward a small stream a few feet off the trail. Seth followed the stream, watching the water run over and between the stones, until the water widened to a broader pool, collecting in a small pond. As he walked around the edge of the pond, Seth saw that debris had collected across the stream to form a dam. The water filtered through the sticks and debris, slowly continuing beyond the reservoir to continue its journey as a stream once again. As Seth sat and watched the water collect and then continued through the dam down the stream, he experienced a similar flow with his emotions. Flowing in, collecting, but then slowly dissipating over time. This space felt very peaceful, but the image of this stream, reservoir, and dam felt important to Seth.
Seth enjoyed spending time at his new peaceful space, but also knew his brothers, David and Adam, would enjoy seeing it, so Seth invited them to join him in the woods. As they left the trail together and turned the bend in the stream toward the reservoir and dam, David shared what he had learned on a recent field trip to a hydroelectric dam. David explained that people often create dams to provide fresh drinking water and recreation in the reservoir, to control flooding and drought, and to generate power by spinning turbines as the water moved through gates in the dam wall. David said that the outlet of water must be carefully controlled to maintain the appropriate level on the reservoir ahead of storms or droughts so that all these functions can work most effectively. When they reached the place where the reservoir and dam had been, David, Adam, and Seth saw that some recent rain had overwhelmed the natural stick-filled dam and broken through, clearing the clog on the stream but spreading the sticks and debris all along the edges of the stream.
As Seth pointed out the changes in the stream and water flow to his brothers, he realized that his experience with his emotions recently felt like what happened with his stream. Most of the time, Seth experienced strong emotions in the moment, but they would gradually reduce over time, like the water collecting in the reservoir and slowly filtering through the debris to continue downstream. However, like the water surge from the recent storm, sometimes Seth’s emotions came too big and fast, and he would blow up, saying and doing things that damaged his relationships with others and would require repairs to these relationships through confession, apology, and forgiveness.
Back in the classroom, Seth started applying what he'd learned. When faced with situations that previously triggered anger, he paused, visualizing the garden and the reservoir he'd built with his brothers. This newfound control allowed him to express his emotions more appropriately, improving his interactions with classmates and teachers. "I feel like I can finally breathe," he confided to David after a successful day at school.
As the days turned into weeks, Seth continued to visit the garden, nurturing his emotional reservoir with the support of David and Adam. The vibrant colors of the sunset bathed the garden in a warm glow, reflecting the peace and hope that had blossomed within him. "I've learned that emotions aren't something to fear," he mused, "but something to understand and embrace." With his brothers by his side, Seth looked forward to the future, ready to face whatever emotions lay ahead with confidence and grace.
