In the heart of this quaint village, Rahul stood at his doorstep, watching his children chase each other around the yard. His daughter, Anaya, giggled as her younger brother, Rohan, tried to catch her. Rahul's heart swelled with contentment, but a shadow of worry loomed over him. It had been weeks since his younger brother, Vikram, visited with his family.
"I hope Vikram and the boys come today," Rahul mused aloud, turning to his wife, Priya, who was arranging flowers in a vase on the porch.
"They will, dear. It's tradition," Priya replied with a reassuring smile, though even she felt a twinge of doubt.
Rahul glanced at the untouched picnic spread laid out on the table. Priya brought him a cup of tea, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Perhaps something came up," Priya suggested gently.
"Or perhaps he's forgotten us," Rahul murmured, a hint of bitterness creeping into his voice.
Rahul sat alone by the window, watching the colors fade into night. Memories of their childhood flooded his mind—how he had once been a guide and protector to Vikram.
"We were inseparable," he whispered to himself, the echo of their shared laughter lingering in his thoughts.
Rahul made his way to Vikram's grand estate, a stark contrast to the humble homes in the village. The gates creaked open as a servant nodded him in.
Vikram met him in the study, where opulent furnishings spoke of his newfound wealth.
"Brother, what brings you here?" Vikram asked, surprise mingling with apprehension.
"We've missed you, Vikram. The children miss their cousins. It's been too long," Rahul replied, his voice steady yet tinged with sadness.
"I... I didn't realize how much I'd let things slip," Vikram admitted, his tone sincere. "I got caught up in my work and... I forgot what truly matters."
Rahul nodded, relief washing over him, though he maintained a gentle firmness.
"It's not too late to make amends, brother," he said, extending a hand.
Vikram's sons, Aarav and Karan, played with Anaya and Rohan, their laughter filling the yard. The brothers stood side by side, watching their families merge once more.
"Thank you for reminding me of what's important," Vikram said, a grateful smile on his face.
"Family always comes first," Rahul replied, feeling the bond between them strengthen anew.
