Lila and Maya sat at their usual corner table, a glass jar between them. Its surface sparkled as the sunlight hit it, revealing a rainbow of pastel-colored notes inside.
"I can't believe summer's almost over," Lila sighed, twirling a lock of hair absentmindedly.
"I know, but at least we have this," Maya replied, tapping the lid of the jar with a smile. "Let's fill it with memories to carry with us."
Lila unfolded a note and read it aloud. "Remember when we got caught in that rainstorm during the carnival?" She chuckled, her eyes sparkling with the memory.
Maya nodded, her expression wistful. "We laughed so hard, our sides hurt. It's moments like those I cherish the most."
Lila added the note to the jar, the sound of paper crinkling softly.
Maya hesitated before holding up another note. "The day we both got into college," She read, emotion coloring her voice. "That was a turning point for us."
Lila reached across the table to squeeze her friend's hand. "We've come a long way, haven't we? But we'll always have each other."
Lila and Maya exchanged a glance, understanding passing silently between them.
"It's not about the big milestones, is it? It's the little things that truly matter," Lila said softly.
"Exactly," Maya agreed, looking at the jar now almost full. "These notes remind us of who we are together."
Lila secured the lid on the jar, her fingers lingering on the cool glass.
"This isn't goodbye," Maya assured her, her voice steady despite the emotion in her eyes.
"No, it's just the beginning of a new chapter," Lila replied, a smile breaking through the bittersweet moment.
Lila and Maya stood, the jar cradled gently between them.
"No matter where we go, we'll always have this," Maya said, glancing at the jar.
"And each other," Lila added, linking arms with her friend as they stepped out into the evening, their laughter echoing into the night.
