Maya adjusted her thick-framed glasses, feeling their familiar weight on her nose as she navigated through the bustling crowd. Lily, with her own glasses perched precariously at the tip of her nose, noticed Maya from a distance. The two girls exchanged a shy smile, a silent acknowledgment of their shared accessory.
"Hey, you're in my gym class, right?" Lily asked, her voice barely above the chatter around them.
"Yeah, I am!" Maya responded, feeling a warm sense of camaraderie. "It's nice to finally talk to someone who understands the struggle of wearing these," she added with a playful tap on her glasses.
Maya and Lily stood side by side, their glasses fogging slightly from the exertion. They both laughed as they tried—unsuccessfully—to dodge the incoming balls with limited visibility.
"I think these glasses are more of a hindrance than a help in dodgeball," Maya joked, dodging another ball by mere inches.
"Tell me about it! But at least we have each other for moral support," Lily replied, her laughter infectious.
The world blurred instantly as Maya and Lily both gasped, scrambling to pick up their now broken glasses. The lenses were cracked, frames bent, rendering them nearly useless.
"Oh no, what are we going to do?" Maya lamented, holding the shattered pieces carefully.
"We'll figure something out," Lily reassured, her optimism unwavering despite the setback.
Lily squinted at her tray, attempting to decipher the contents. Maya giggled as she handed over a slice of pizza, her vision equally challenged but her spirit undeterred.
"You know, maybe this is a blessing in disguise. We're seeing the world differently now," Maya mused.
"And it's not so bad," Lily agreed, their bond growing stronger through shared adversity.
Maya and Lily walked out together, their laughter echoing through the emptying corridors. Despite the blurry outlines of the world around them, their friendship was clearer than ever.
"Let's meet at the optometrist tomorrow," Maya suggested with a smile.
"Definitely. But no matter what, I've got your back," Lily replied, their shared journey just beginning.
