Fatima stood by the entrance, adjusting her deep blue hijab as she entered the busy crowd. Excitement and nervousness filled her heart, as it was her first day at a new school. "Here goes nothing," she said.
Ms. Thompson, a warm and friendly teacher with a big smile, welcomed Fatima to the class. Fatima could feel all the curious eyes on her, and her heart was racing. "Class, let’s give Fatima a big, friendly welcome as she joins our class!" Ms. Thompson said cheerfully. With her bright eyes and cheerful smile, Emma waved from across the room. "Hey, Fatima! Sit with us! We’d love to introduce ourselves!"
Later, Fatima joined Emma and her friends by the swings during lunchtime. They talked about their favourite shows and shared snacks, enjoying the conversation. Fatima felt happy to be included. "Your hijab is so pretty," Emma said, admiring the patterns with a big smile. "Thanks! My grandma helped me choose it," Fatima replied with a bigger smile.
Suddenly, a group of older kids walked by, laughing and making fun of Fatima. One of the kids, Jake, said with a teasing voice, "Nice hat, Fatima. Are you hiding something under there?" "Are you bald or what?" Fatima's smile disappeared, but Emma told Fatima. "Ignore them. They're just bullies."
Fatima was quiet for the rest of the afternoon because she felt sad. Emma noticed and tried to cheer her up. While talking, Emma found a book about different religions and cultures. She showed it to Fatima. They looked through the book together and became very interested in it. The book had pictures of different religions, their practices, clothing and celebrations. It also talked about how everybody can peacefully live by respecting each other's cultures. "I love learning about new traditions!" Fatima said while pointing at the colourful pictures. "Me too," Emma said. "I’m happy we’re friends!"
At the end of the day, Fatima walked with Emma, feeling happy about how the day turned out. She knew that her hijab was not just a piece of cloth; it represented her identity and culture, something she could wear proudly. She knew that it might take some time for others to understand her in a new community, but she was lucky to find a friend like Emma. “ See you tomorrow!" as they said goodbye. "Bye!" Emma said with a smile. Fatima headed home confidently, ready to face each new day with courage and determination.
