Lila sat across from the doctor, her hands trembling slightly. The room was quiet, save for the ticking clock and her own heartbeat pounding in her ears. "So, what does this mean?" she asked, her voice steady despite the fear curling in her stomach.
Dr. Kim, a kind-eyed woman in her fifties, leaned forward, resting her elbows on the desk. "It means we need to make the most of the time you have, Lila," she said gently. The words hung in the air, heavy and undeniable.
Lila stared at her bucket list, determination setting her features into a look of fierce resolve. Her fingers traced over the words "Visit the museum," "Sleepover under the stars," and "Christmas in July." "I’m doing this," she whispered to herself.
Maya, her best friend, peeked into the room, her eyes questioning. "We’re going to need a lot of planning," Lila announced, a smile breaking across her face as Maya rushed in for a hug.
Lila, Maya, and Jake wandered through the museum, their laughter mingling with the quiet ambiance. Lila paused before a vibrant painting, her eyes wide with wonder. "It’s like the colors are alive," Jake remarked, standing beside her.
"I feel like I’m in a dream," Lila replied, her voice soft with awe. She reached out as if to touch the hues, her fingers hovering just above the surface.
Lila lay on her back, staring up at the sky, her heart full. Maya and Jake were beside her, their laughter ringing out into the still night. "This is perfect," Maya sighed, her voice content.
"Better than I ever imagined," Lila agreed, feeling peace settle over her like a warm blanket.
Lila, wearing a Santa hat, handed Maya a brightly wrapped gift. "Merry Christmas!" she exclaimed, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
"You really went all out," Maya laughed, tearing into the wrapping paper. Jake joined them, a plate of cookies in hand, his eyes bright with joy.
"This is the best Christmas I’ve ever had," Jake declared, and Lila’s heart swelled with happiness.
Lila lay in her bed, the room filled with the warmth of remembered laughter and love. Maya and Jake sat by her side, their hands clasped with hers.
"We’ll always have our summer," Maya whispered, tears in her eyes.
"And all those memories," Lila breathed, her voice a soft echo of contentment. With a final smile, she closed her eyes, letting the peace of their shared moments carry her away.
