The tall, one-eyed student stood in the middle of the room, his pale face reflecting the dim lighting. Clutching his gold phone tightly, he blinked back tears that threatened to fall. The air was heavy with unspoken words and the faint scent of old books.
"I just don't understand why they find it funny," he murmured to himself, voice barely above a whisper.
He stepped out, his footsteps hesitant, as if he were walking through an invisible barrier that separated him from the rest of the world. The whispers and giggles of his classmates reached his ears, each one like a needle prick against his skin. "Do they really think I'm a joke?" he thought, his lone eye scanning the faces that turned away, pretending not to notice his distress.
One of the classmates, a girl with a bright smile and carefree demeanor, glanced over, her laughter subsiding as she caught sight of the tears he tried to hide. "Oh, come on, it was just a joke," she called out, her voice carrying a hint of guilt masked by bravado.
Another student, taller and with a mischievous glint in his eyes, chimed in, "Lighten up, man. It's not that serious."
He walked slowly, the rain mingling with his tears until he couldn't tell where one ended and the other began. The gold phone in his hand felt heavy, a symbol of the connection to a world that seemed so far out of reach. "Why can't they understand?" he mused, bitterness tainting his thoughts as he sought solace in the solitude of the rain.
He took a deep breath, closing his eye to the world and letting the rain wash away the sting of laughter. "I am more than their jokes," he affirmed to himself, feeling the weight of his own worth settle into his bones. The rain became a companion, a reminder that even in the loneliest moments, there is always the promise of a new beginning.
He turned back towards the campus, determination replacing the despair that once clouded his vision. The laughter of his classmates faded into the background, replaced by the steady beat of his heart. "I will find my place," he resolved, taking a step forward into the light that promised a brighter tomorrow.
