Grandfather stood quietly, his weathered hands resting on the shoulders of his grandchildren, Ella and Max. The air was cool yet comforting, a perfect backdrop for the bittersweet occasion. Ella knelt beside the headstone, carefully arranging a bouquet of bright marigolds, while Max traced the engraved letters of Grandma's name with his small fingers.
"Your grandma loved marigolds," Grandfather said, his voice a gentle rumble. "She said they reminded her of the sun, always brightening her day."
Grandfather chuckled softly as he recalled the vibrant gardens Grandma tended with love and care. "There was a time," he began, "when she turned our whole backyard into a sea of marigolds. Your mother called it 'The Sun's Garden.'"
Ella smiled, imagining the golden blooms swaying in the breeze. Max, leaning against his grandfather's leg, asked, "Did she plant them every year?"
"Every spring," Grandfather replied. "She believed they carried the spirit of summer, even when the days grew short and the nights long."
Grandfather looked at the headstone, his eyes misty yet serene. "I too will join her someday," he said, his voice steady. "And when I do, I want you to remember me just as we remember her today. Bury me beside her, with honor and dignity, for that is how I wish to be remembered."
Ella squeezed her grandfather's hand, while Max nodded solemnly.
"Family is like a garden," Grandfather continued. "It needs love, attention, and care. Each of us is a flower, unique and special. And when one of us is gone, the garden still blooms with their memory."
Ella looked up at him, her eyes filled with admiration. "We will remember, Grandpa," she promised.
With a lingering glance at Grandma's grave, Grandfather took a deep breath, the scent of marigolds mingling with the crisp autumn air. The three of them turned to leave, their hearts a little lighter, knowing that love and memories bind them together, now and always.
"We'll plant marigolds next spring," Max said with determination, and Grandfather smiled, nodding in agreement.
