Christina stood at the edge of the hallway, her heart pounding with a mix of apprehension and hope. "Christina, are you okay?" she heard Oliva ask gently beside her. "I'm fine... come on, let's go to class," she replied, forcing a smile as they made their way through the crowd. Each step felt like a new beginning, filled with uncertainty yet brimming with possibilities.
Christina found her seat and glanced around, her eyes widening in surprise when she noticed familiar faces among her classmates. "I can't believe they came to my school," she thought, curious about what this year might hold. The teacher's voice cut through the din, Mrs. Thompson's warm smile reassuring as she welcomed everyone to 8th grade. "Welcome, everyone! Are you ready for an exciting year?"
"Do we get to choose groups?" she asked, a hint of defiance in her tone. Mrs. Thompson shook her head, "No, Karen. Groups are assigned to help everyone work together." A frustrated sigh escaped Karen's lips as she turned her gaze toward Christina, eyes narrowing in an unspoken challenge. Christina felt a chill run down her spine but turned away, focusing on the teacher's words.
Christina sat at a table with Oliva and Anwar, whose presence was a source of comfort. As they ate, whispers and rumors swirled around them like an invisible cloud. "You see that chick? I don't like her," a voice muttered from a nearby table. Anwar glanced over, his expression calm yet firm. "You don't know her like that, so leave her be," he said quietly, his voice carrying a weight of quiet authority.
Christina, Oliva, and Anwar found a quiet spot under a large oak tree, its branches providing a canopy of shade. "Why did you stand up for me?" Christina asked, her voice tinged with curiosity and gratitude. "Because everyone deserves a chance," Anwar replied simply, a small smile playing on his lips. Oliva nodded in agreement, "We want to get to know you for who you really are, not just what people say."
Christina felt a sense of warmth and belonging she hadn't expected, her heart lighter than it had been in a long time. "Thank you for being here," she said softly to her new friends. Oliva smiled brightly, "We're just getting started. There's so much more to discover, and we're with you every step of the way."
As the three of them walked together toward the setting sun, Christina knew that this was the beginning of something special—a journey of friendship, understanding, and hope.
