Lila lounged on the velvet couch, scrolling through her tablet with a bored expression. Her parents, Mark and Susan, sat across from her, exchanging anxious glances.
"I want the new VR headset," Lila demanded, her eyes glued to the screen.
"Sweetheart, we've talked about this," Mark began hesitantly, his voice soft but firm. "Things are a bit tight right now."
Lila's face twisted into a scowl. "You always say that! Why can't you just get it for me?" she shouted, her voice rising with each word.
"Lila, please understand," Susan interjected, trying to calm the brewing storm. "We love you, but sometimes we have to be careful with our spending."
Lila stood up abruptly, her eyes blazing with anger. "Love? You only love me when you can buy me things!"
Lila stormed out of the room, her footsteps echoing down the hallway. She slammed the door to her bedroom, throwing herself onto her bed, surrounded by all the things she thought she loved.
She lay there, staring at the ceiling, as the rain continued to fall outside. Her parents' words echoed in her mind, stirring something unfamiliar within her—a sense of guilt.
Lila picked up a framed photo from her bedside table. It was a picture of her family at the beach, smiling and carefree. She recalled the warmth of the sun, the sound of her parents' laughter, and realized that those moments meant more than any gadget.
"Maybe I was wrong," she whispered to herself, a tear slipping down her cheek.
Lila emerged from her room, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. She found her parents in the kitchen, worry etched on their faces.
"Mom, Dad," Lila began, her voice trembling. "I'm sorry for what I said. I know you love me, even when you can't buy me things."
Mark and Susan exchanged a look of relief, pulling Lila into a warm embrace.
"We love you more than anything, sweetheart," Susan said softly, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
Lila sat with her parents, sharing stories and laughter. She realized that love wasn't measured by the things one could buy, but by the moments shared and the bonds forged.
"Maybe we could all go for a walk later," Lila suggested, her voice filled with hope.
"We'd love that," Mark replied, smiling at his daughter with pride.
Together, they enjoyed the simple pleasure of each other's company, as the world outside seemed a little brighter.
