Ethan, a lanky freshman with nervous blue eyes, sits at the edge of his bed, methodically tucking a discreet package into his backpack. His hands tremble slightly as he glances at Jamie, his roommate, who leans against the desk, pretending to scroll on his phone but keeping a protective eye on Ethan.
"Don’t worry, man. I packed extra snacks, so no one will poke around your bag,"
"Thanks, Jamie. I just… I hope this trip goes smoothly,"
Ethan sits by the window, knees drawn up, his hoodie pulled low. He feels the reassuring bulk of his nighttime protection beneath his jeans. Jamie sits beside him, cracking jokes to distract from Ethan’s anxiety. Two other boys—Zack and Connor, notorious pranksters—eye them from across the aisle, their whispers barely audible over the engine.
"Bet Ethan’s hiding something in that bag of his. Wanna check it out later?"
"Yeah, let’s wait till he’s out,"
As laughter rises around the campfire, Ethan slips away early, clutching his backpack. He moves quietly toward his tent, hoping to prepare for the night unnoticed. In the distance, Zack and Connor exchange a conspiratorial grin and drift toward Ethan’s tent after he leaves.
"Let’s see what secrets our quiet friend is hiding,"
Ethan’s heart pounds as he unzips his backpack and finds it suspiciously light. He digs through clothes and toiletries, panic rising as he realizes his diapers are missing. Jamie enters, eyes widening at Ethan’s distress.
"They’re gone, Jamie. I can’t find them anywhere. What am I supposed to do?"
"We’ll figure something out. Maybe you’ll make it through the night. I’m here, okay?"
Zack and Connor loiter nearby, snickering as Ethan passes. The other campers are busy packing up, but a few notice the awkward tension. Jamie walks beside Ethan, casting a protective glare at the pranksters.
"Hey, Ethan, rough night? Looks like someone forgot his bedtime routine,"
Ethan, forced to sit without protection, tries to focus on the passing landscape. Anxiety gnaws at him, and despite his best efforts, he feels warmth spreading beneath him as the bus rattles over a pothole. Zack and Connor notice immediately, exchanging triumphant glances.
"Hey, looks like the baby forgot to put his diapers on again!"
"Maybe next time, you should ask for help, Ethan,"
Ethan hangs back, cheeks burning, but Jamie is at his side, helping gather Ethan’s things. Jamie glares at the pranksters, then turns to Ethan with a small, reassuring smile.
"You know what? Forget them. Some people never grow up. You’re stronger than they’ll ever be,"
"Thanks, Jamie. I don’t know what I’d do without you,"
