In a small, lively village in Northern Mindanao, Regine was known for her joy and boundless energy. Her laughter filled the air as she played with friends, climbed trees, and dreamed of becoming a doctor. "One day, I'll help the sick and become a doctor!" she often declared to her parents.
One morning, Regine awoke with a runny nose and itchy eyes. Inay, her mother, reassured her it was just a cold. However, her condition worsened, leaving her exhausted and unwilling to go to school. "I can't breathe well, Inay. My head hurts," she confided, eyes filled with uncertainty.
As days went by, Regine sensed a presence—a shadow clinging to her, stealing her breath. At night, she dreamt of suffocating dust clouds. "It's like something evil won't leave me alone," she whispered, gripping her pillow tightly.
One stormy night, Regine struggled to breathe, feeling a heavy weight on her chest. Itay, her father, rushed her to the hospital amidst the rain. "Inay, I can't breathe!" she gasped, fear and tears mingling in her eyes.
At the hospital, Regine lay on a white bed, her parents worriedly watching. Dra. Santos, the doctor, entered with a calming presence. "Regine, let's find out what's troubling you," she encouraged, her shadow stretching long and comforting.
After thorough tests, Dra. Santos revealed the truth. "Regine, you have Severe Allergic Rhinitis. It’s why you’ve been feeling unwell," she explained. Relief washed over Regine; her invisible foe was not a monster, but a condition she could fight.
Regine's family made changes at home to reduce allergens, and the community rallied to support her. With her condition managed, Regine returned to school, her laughter once again filling the village air. She was no longer the "Batang Uhugin," but a spirited girl who faced her fears and won.
