Maya stood near her locker, her arms crossed and her expression a perfect blend of boredom and disdain. Her eyes scanned the crowd, seemingly searching for something to scorn. "Move it, will you?" she snapped at a passing student who accidentally brushed against her.
Lila sat alone at a corner table, her tray untouched. She was new, her shyness evident as she fumbled with her book. From across the room, Maya caught sight of her. "Who's the new kid?" she asked, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
Maya found Lila tucked away in a secluded corner, her nose buried in a novel. "Hey, you're the new girl, right?" Maya asked, her voice unusually lacking its usual sharpness. Lila hesitated before nodding, "Yes, I'm Lila."
Maya sat on her bed, her phone buzzing with messages she ignored. Instead, she thought about Lila and their growing friendship. "Maybe I don't have to be this way," she murmured to herself, the rain echoing her inner turmoil.
Maya and Lila walked along the path, Maya finally opening up about her past. "People expect me to be tough, but it's exhausting," she confessed. Lila listened quietly, "You can be whoever you want to be, Maya," she encouraged gently.
Maya, with Lila by her side, smiled genuinely for the first time in a long while. As she glanced around, she realized her world was changing, and for once, she was okay with that. "Thanks for being my friend," she said softly to Lila, who simply nodded in return, their bond strengthened by understanding and acceptance.
