Riley stepped out of the car, her suitcase in hand, feeling the weight of change pressing down on her. Her aunt Maria and uncle Dave greeted her with forced smiles, their eyes betraying the discomfort they felt.
"Welcome, Riley," Maria said, her voice overly sweet. "You must be exhausted."
"Yeah, it's been... a lot," Riley replied, trying to match their feigned warmth.
Riley stared at the plate in front of her, piled high with food. Unaccustomed to such portions, she hesitated.
"Eat up, Riley," Dave encouraged, his tone firm yet deceptively friendly. "You need your strength."
"Thanks, Uncle Dave," Riley murmured, picking up her fork reluctantly.
Riley lay on her bed, the wrappers of chocolate bars and chip bags strewn around her. Her phone buzzed with notifications she chose to ignore.
"Just one more episode," she told herself, reaching for another candy bar despite the growing discomfort in her once-toned stomach.
Riley touched her face, noticing the softness that had crept in. Her clothes felt snug, unfamiliar.
"I've gained weight," she whispered, the realization dawning with a mix of disbelief and dread.
Mia, once the shy cousin, now exuded a newfound confidence. She approached Riley with a hesitant smile.
"Running helps," Mia suggested gently. "Maybe you could join me sometime."
"I don't have time," Riley replied, her voice tinged with defensiveness.
Riley moved through the crowd, her heart pounding. Whispers followed her, each one a reminder of her changed status.
"Guess the weight's finally caught up to you," a voice snickered, echoing her own past cruelty.
Riley paused, the sting of their words cutting deep, as she realized the irony of her situation.
