Betty sat at the small round table, her fingers wrapped around a warm mug, as she gazed at Angie with a mixture of concern and curiosity. "It's been so long, Angie. I'm glad we could finally catch up," she said, her voice gentle yet probing.
Angie nodded, her expression weary but grateful. "Yes, it's been a whirlwind, to say the least," she replied, her eyes briefly flickering with a hidden sadness.
Angie began recounting the recent upheavals in her life, describing William's abrupt transformation with incredulity. "You won't believe it, Betty. One day he's all about casual comfort, and the next, he's a whole new person," she said, shaking her head.
Betty leaned forward, intrigued. "I heard something about your marriage being rocky. What happened?" she asked softly, her eyes filled with empathy.
Angie recounted William's mantra—"It's time for a change." Each instance of his transformation seemed more absurd than the last. "He bought a sports car, dyed his hair, and even started working out," she said, her voice tinged with disbelief.
Betty listened intently, her brow furrowing. "And then he asked for a divorce?"
Angie nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. "Yes, for his secretary. I was blindsided," she admitted, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
Betty reached across the table, squeezing Angie's hand reassuringly. "Did you manage to get a good attorney?" she asked, concern etched on her face.
Angie shook her head, a rueful smile playing on her lips. "I couldn't afford one. But I went to see Zelda. She's... unconventional," she said, her voice trailing off mysteriously.
Angie excused herself and walked into the bedroom, where a crib stood against the wall. Inside, a baby boy fussed, his tiny hands reaching out. Angie lifted him gently, inspecting his diaper with a knowing smile.
"William," she said softly, her voice echoing with a newfound sense of peace. "It's time for a change."
Betty stood in the doorway, her eyes wide with realization. "Is that...?" she began, her voice trailing off in astonishment.
Angie nodded, her heart full. "Yes, it's him. Zelda's magic is... quite effective," she said, her smile both mischievous and content.
The baby gurgled happily in Angie's arms, a fresh start in a world full of endless possibilities.
