Jack sat quietly in the back corner of the room, his nose buried in a thick novel. His glasses reflected the shifting light as he turned a page, absorbed in another world.
Steve, his only friend, leaned over, whispering about the upcoming science project.
"I think I'll focus on the solar system this time," Jack replied, his voice barely above a whisper. The tranquility of the moment was broken by the harsh laughter of Drake and his gang from the other side of the room.
Drake and his friends cornered Jack by his locker, their faces twisted with disdain.
"Think you're better than us, huh?" Drake taunted, shoving Jack against the cold metal.
Jack clenched his fists, his mind racing with a mix of fear and anger. He wanted to fight back but knew it wasn't the right time.
"Leave me alone," he managed, his voice steady despite the turmoil within.
Jack trained relentlessly, his superpower slowly becoming a part of him. His punches moved with blinding speed, the bag swinging wildly with each impact.
He recalled the day he discovered his power, the shock of running to school in mere seconds.
"I can use this for good," he'd promised himself, but the seed of vengeance lingered, tempting him with dark thoughts.
Jack found Steve lying on the ground, bruised and bleeding, with Drake standing over him, laughing cruelly. Rage erupted within Jack, his vision blurring with fury. He lunged at Drake, his punch landing with a force that sent shockwaves through the air. The world seemed to slow as Drake fell, unconscious, and Jack rushed to cradle his fallen friend.
"Stay with me, Steve," he pleaded, but the injuries were too severe. Steve slipped away, leaving Jack alone in the storm's eye.
Jack sat in his room, the weight of his actions pressing down like a heavy cloak. He replayed the moment over and over, wishing he could change what had happened.
"I didn't mean for this," he whispered to the empty room, filled with regret and sorrow. The memory of Steve's smile haunted him, a reminder of what he'd lost.
Jack knew he had to live with the burden, his heart aching with guilt.
Jack walked through the quiet streets, his head bowed in thought. He'd decided to honor Steve's memory by helping others, hoping to find peace in acts of kindness.
"I can make a difference," he resolved, his steps growing more confident. Though the path to redemption was long, Jack was ready to embrace it, determined to use his powers for the greater good, and to forgive himself for the past.
