Maya sat in the back row, her eyes fixed on the clock as the hands ticked steadily towards the end of another school day. The room buzzed with the low hum of chatter, but she barely registered it, lost in the depths of her own mind. Her fingers twisted around a loose thread on her sweater, a small comfort amid the chaos swirling inside her.
Lila glanced over at her friend, her brow furrowed with concern. "Maya, are you okay?" she asked softly, her voice barely audible over the din.
"Yeah, just tired," Maya replied, forcing a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
As they walked down the corridor, Maya felt a familiar knot forming in her stomach. Every step seemed to jolt her nerves, sending ripples of discomfort through her body. Lila kept pace beside her, matching her stride.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Lila asked gently, her hand brushing against Maya's in a gesture of support.
"It's nothing, really," Maya said quickly, her voice edged with a hint of desperation. "Just a bit stressed, I guess."
Maya lay on her bed, clutching her stomach as a wave of nausea crashed over her. Her breath came in short gasps, the pain spreading like wildfire through her veins. Each heartbeat felt like a drum pounding against her chest, relentless and unforgiving.
Her phone buzzed with a message from Lila, but Maya couldn't bring herself to respond. The room felt too small, the air too thick, suffocating her in its embrace.
Lila sat cross-legged on her bed, staring at her phone. The unanswered messages felt like a chasm between them, widening with each passing moment. She wanted to help, to be there for Maya, but every attempt seemed futile.
"Please, just talk to me," she whispered into the darkness, hoping her words would somehow reach her friend.
Maya looked at Lila, her eyes reflecting the turmoil within. Lila reached out, her hand warm against Maya's cold fingers.
"You don't have to go through this alone," Lila said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her heart.
"I don't want to be a burden," Maya replied, tears brimming in her eyes. "It's just... so hard."
Lila pulled Maya into a hug, their shared warmth a balm against the cold. "We'll figure this out together," she promised, her words a lifeline in the storm.
Maya nodded, the weight of silence finally lifting as she allowed herself to lean on her friend. In the midst of the rain, there was hope—a glimmer of light piercing through the shadows.
