Arie stands in front of the mirror, gently adjusting her braids, her fingers trembling just slightly as she prepares for another day at school. Thoughts race through her mind as she carefully chooses her favorite hoodie, hoping its bright yellow will give her courage. In the silence, she steels herself for whatever the day might bring.
"You got this, Arie. Today will be different," she whispers to her reflection.
Arie walks through the crowd, clutching her backpack tightly. Her gaze darts around, searching for a safe path past the boys who always seem to find her. Suddenly, she hears a familiar voice ring out, teasing and mocking in a way that makes her heart sink.
"Hey, Arie! Did you get lost in the hair store again?" calls RJ from the group, his friends snickering behind him. Yet, beneath the bravado, his eyes linger on her a moment longer than usual.
Arie focuses on her notebook, her pen moving in shaky lines as she tries to ignore the snickers. RJ’s gaze is intense, and for a moment their eyes meet; he quickly looks away, pretending to laugh with his friends. The teacher pauses, glancing over, but the moment passes without intervention.
"Wish they'd just leave me alone," Arie mutters under her breath, her knuckles white around her pen.
RJ's Girlfriend, a tall girl with sharp eyes and a confident stance, steps forward, her tone icy. "Why do you keep looking at RJ, huh? Think you’re special or something?" The crowd turns to watch, tension thickening like storm clouds.
"I’m not looking for trouble. Just trying to get my lunch," Arie responds, voice steady but eyes blazing. The confrontation escalates, voices rising until a teacher steps in and sends both girls to the office.
As the principal lectures the girls on respect and kindness, RJ makes his decision. He enters the office, his face flushed but determined. "Look, I know I’ve messed up. But I like Arie. I don’t want to be a jerk anymore," he announces, surprising everyone, especially Arie.
"I want to start over. Maybe we could hang out sometime?" RJ says, hope flickering in his voice. Arie considers for a moment, then nods, the weight of the day lifting just a little.
"Yeah, I think I'd like that," she replies, a new chapter beginning as the sun dips lower, painting the sky with promise.
