Bilel stood at the edge of the courtyard, his gaze fixed on the throng of new faces. Moving to a new city was always daunting, and Bilel felt the weight of unfamiliarity pressing in on him. He tightened his grip on his backpack, aware of the watchful eyes around him. Across the courtyard, Nouh was laughing with a group of friends, his presence commanding and confident. Bilel scowled, unimpressed by Nouh's apparent ease. "Just another braggart," he muttered under his breath.
Bilel found his locker and began to unpack his belongings when Nouh approached, his expression smug. "So, you're Salma's little brother, huh?" Nouh said, leaning casually against the lockers. Bilel bristled at the mention of his sister. "Stay away from her," he replied tersely. Nouh chuckled, unfazed. "Relax, we're just having fun," he said, but Bilel was not convinced. The tension between them was palpable, a silent promise of more conflicts to come.
Rahma, a mutual friend and peacemaker, noticed the animosity between Bilel and Nouh. "You guys need to chill," she said during a group project. Her gaze was firm but kind. Bilel shrugged, unwilling to concede any ground. Nouh, however, smirked and said, "Maybe we should just fight it out and get it over with." Rahma rolled her eyes, "Or you could just talk like normal people." Her words lingered in the air, unheeded but not forgotten.
Bilel stayed late at school to finish an assignment when he overheard a conversation that would change everything. Hidden in the shadows, he listened as two men discussed his father's betrayal. His heart pounded in his chest, disbelief and fear warring within him. As the voices faded into the distance, Bilel realized he needed help. Reluctantly, he thought of Nouh.
Bilel approached Nouh the next day, his expression serious. "I need to talk to you," he said, his voice low. Nouh, surprised, nodded and followed him to a secluded table. Bilel explained what he'd heard, his words tumbling out in a rush. "Why are you telling me this?" Nouh asked, skepticism in his eyes. "Because you're the only one who can help," Bilel admitted, reluctance evident in his tone. Nouh considered him for a moment before nodding. "Alright, let's do it," he said, unexpected camaraderie forming between them.
As Bilel and Nouh walked side by side, their initial animosity had been replaced by a tentative understanding. Nouh glanced at Bilel, a hint of respect in his eyes. "You know, you're not so bad," he said with a smirk. Bilel chuckled, "Don't let it go to your head." The city around them buzzed with life, but for the first time, Bilel felt a sense of belonging. The path ahead was uncertain, but with Nouh at his side, he felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
