Leo stretched lazily in his bed, the familiar surroundings offering comfort. He could hear the distant chirping of birds and the faint sound of a lawnmower from a neighbor’s yard. Today was a day for learning about safety at home, a topic that sometimes made Leo feel anxious but also curious.
"Remember, Leo, safety is important," his mother’s voice echoed in his mind. She always said that being prepared was the best way to feel secure.
Leo walked towards the door, his steps deliberate and slow. He remembered the first rule of safety: always lock the doors. He reached for the door handle, feeling its cool metal under his fingertips, and turned the lock with a satisfying click.
"This way, no one can come in without us knowing," he reassured himself, feeling a small swell of pride.
Leo studied the fire alarm, recalling the sound it made during the last drill. He focused on its purpose, understanding that it was there to alert him to danger.
"If I hear this, I need to leave quickly and call for help," he reminded himself, practicing the steps in his mind.
Leo felt a slight flutter of nerves at the thought of darkness taking over suddenly. But then he remembered the flashlight in the drawer, and the plan his parents had taught him.
"I just need to find the flashlight and stay calm," he whispered, opening the drawer to check its contents. The flashlight was there, its presence soothing his worries.
Leo and his family gathered outside, practicing their fire safety drill. They moved through the steps methodically, repeating them until they felt second nature.
"We meet by the big oak tree," Leo said confidently, pointing to the towering tree that stood sentinel at the edge of the yard.
Leo sat with his parents, a sense of accomplishment settling over him. He had learned so much about staying safe at home, and it made him feel empowered.
"I can do this," he said quietly, a smile spreading across his face. His parents nodded in agreement, proud of his progress and newfound confidence.
