Toby the Turtle, with a shiny olive shell, looks at his friends with determination. Sally the Sloth hangs slightly off the side of the log, her fur a soft gray, blinking slowly but smiling brightly. Carlos the Capybara sits upright, his brown fur ruffled and his notebook open, pencil gripped in his little paw.
"Today, I want to practice saying words with tricky sounds, like 'school' and 'skunk'," Toby says, his voice steady but careful.
"Me too!" Sally chimes in, stretching. "Sometimes, the 's' and 'r' sounds twist my tongue."
"Let's help each other! I brought my notebook so we can see how to spell them, too," Carlos adds, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
"Sss...kool. School," Toby tries, his tongue sticking out in concentration.
"Shhh...shool? No, wait. Sss-kool," Sally giggles, brushing her fur out of her eyes.
"Look, it's spelled s-c-h-o-o-l," Carlos points out in his notebook. "The 's' and 'c-h' come together to make the 'sk' sound."
"Why is English so funny sometimes? But I think I've got it: school," Toby grins.
"Oh! Skunk!" Sally exclaims, careful to keep her voice soft.
"Another s-blend. Sss-kunk. S-k-u-n-k," Carlos writes quickly, showing the others.
"Sss... skunk. Hi, Skunk! We're learning your name," Toby calls, and the skunk twitches its nose, then gives a friendly nod.
"Erth... Earth. That 'r' is tricky," Toby mutters, frowning in concentration.
"I like how 'Earth' feels round in my mouth, just like the planet," Sally muses, tracing a circle around the word.
"Earth is spelled e-a-r-t-h. The 'r' is right in the middle, like the Earth's core!" Carlos observes, smiling.
"Birthday! Another 'r' and 'th' blend. Buh... birth... day!" Toby says, savoring each sound.
"B-i-r-t-h-d-a-y," Sally spells, clapping softly.
"Happy birthday to us—for learning new sounds together," Carlos laughs, breaking the cupcake into three pieces.
"I'm glad we practiced. The s-blends and 'r' sound easier now," Toby says quietly.
"We should make this our new tradition," Sally suggests, dreamy-eyed.
"Next time, let's try even harder words. Together, we can learn anything," Carlos agrees, and the three share a warm, satisfied silence as the sun sets beyond the pond.
