The black and white zebra, a quick-footed and cheerful animal, walked beside the black and white badger, who was small, cautious, and always listening for strange sounds. Nearby, the black and white panda, gentle and thoughtful, carried a bundle of bamboo shoots and admired the peaceful evening. The three friends were enjoying their walk when the grove ahead suddenly seemed darker than the rest of the forest, and the air turned cold enough to make them shiver.
The black and white zebra froze first, ears standing straight up, while the black and white badger ducked low to the ground and the black and white panda nearly dropped the bamboo shoots. Then the white shape rose higher, waving like a floating ghost, and all three friends gasped at once. "A ghost is coming out of the trees, and I do not want to stay here one more second because it looks like it is staring right at us," cried the black and white zebra. "Run now, because that sound is the scariest thing I have ever heard in my whole life and I am absolutely not waiting to see what happens next," shouted the black and white badger.
The black and white panda ran as fast as he could, clutching one bamboo shoot like a lucky charm while the black and white zebra raced ahead and the black and white badger zigzagged around roots and stones. Their hearts hammered as the ghostly moan seemed to follow them through the trees, growing louder whenever the wind blew. At last they spotted Geo Umizoomi, a brave and clever helper, standing near a little bridge under the first shining stars.
Geo Umizoomi looked at the three trembling friends and gently raised a hand to settle them down. "There is a scary ghost in the grove, and it floated up in the air and made a terrible sound, and we were so frightened that we ran all the way here to find help," said the black and white panda. "Take a deep breath and tell me everything you saw, because sometimes scary things are not what they seem at first, and we can figure this out together," said Geo Umizoomi. The words made the black and white zebra, the black and white badger, and the black and white panda feel a little braver.
Geo Umizoomi led the way with steady steps, while the black and white zebra stayed close on one side and the black and white badger and the black and white panda followed on the other. The white shape appeared again between the trees, bobbing strangely in the moonlight, and the moaning sound rolled out once more through the grove. "It is there again, and it looks even scarier now that the moon is shining on it, so please tell me you have a plan," whispered the black and white zebra. "I do have a plan, and the first part is to look closely instead of running, because clues always hide inside the things that frighten us most," replied Geo Umizoomi.
Geo Umizoomi stepped forward and pulled the white sheet free from the branch, revealing that the floating ghost had only been cloth blowing in the wind. Then he glanced toward the stump and found a nervous prankster, a shy woodland visitor who had hidden there all along to scare passersby. "I only wanted to play a spooky trick, but I did not mean to frighten everyone so badly, and now I feel sorry for making such a big scare," admitted the prankster. The black and white badger blinked in surprise, and the black and white panda let out a long breath of relief.
Geo Umizoomi helped everyone laugh away the last of their fear and reminded them that courage means looking for the truth even when something seems scary at first. "I am so glad you helped us, because I was sure it was a real ghost, and now I see that fear can make simple things seem much bigger and stranger than they really are," said the black and white panda. "Next time I hear a spooky sound, I will still be careful, but I will also remember to look twice before I run," said the black and white badger. Together, the black and white zebra, the black and white badger, the black and white panda, and Geo Umizoomi walked home under the stars, leaving the not-so-scary ghost behind.
