Aurora leaned over the fence, her small nose wrinkling as she observed the quiet park. "Hmm," she murmured, mostly to herself, her eyebrows knitting together in confusion. "Not as many birds today." Her fingers brushed over her drone, her lip quivering just a little. Where did they all go? She quickly pulled out her drone’s pictures from last week, her fingers tapping impatiently on her phone.
"Look, Fatima!" Aurora's voice trembled slightly as she showed the pictures to her friend. Fatima leaned closer, her eyes narrowing with focus as she studied the drone footage. Her hand rested gently on an open notebook filled with sketches of birds. "You are right, Aurora," she replied seriously, a slight frown on her face. "There are fewer birds, and they're not singing as much. We need to find out why!"
Aurora gasped, pointing to the pond. "Look!" she whispered, her eyes wide with shock. "The water is green and yucky! It looks sick! Why is it like that?" Fatima frowned, her eyes narrowing as she examined the pond. "Oh no," she murmured. "This algae bloom might be why the birds aren't here. Let's go to the Park Friends Meeting to see if they can help."
Fatima approached Mrs. Chen, concern in her voice. "We think the algae bloom is driving the birds away! The pond water has too much food, causing this green stuff to grow." Mrs. Chen nodded, her eyes thoughtful. "Thank you for noticing!" she said. "We can test the water and work together to clean the park. You both did great bringing this to our attention."
Mrs. Chen explained, "Testing will tell us what's causing the algae growth. This helps us keep the birds safe." Fatima watched closely, jotting down notes. "We can help!" Aurora said confidently, her hands steady on her drone’s controls.
Aurora turned to Fatima, her face brightening. "We're learning how to help the park heal!" Fatima nodded, "Yes, and the birds are coming back. Thanks to everyone's efforts, the park is becoming a safe place for them again. We'll keep watching and learning to ensure it stays that way."
