Ronan, a curious boy of five with tousled brown hair, leads the way, his boots squelching in the soft earth. Nestled against his chest, Pádraig, his baby brother, gurgles happily from the comfort of his sling. Ronan pauses under a chestnut tree, scanning the field for signs of movement.
Ronan points excitedly towards the approaching herd. "Look, Pádraig! The cows are coming. Did you know they help keep the grass short and the wildflowers growing? They're like gardeners for the meadow." Pádraig coos in response, waving a tiny fist as if trying to greet the animals.
Ronan kneels, careful not to jostle Pádraig, and opens his notebook, sketching the cow's unique markings. "Hello, Daisy," he murmurs, giving the cow a gentle pat. "Pádraig, this is Daisy. She’s the friendliest cow in the herd. See how soft her nose is?"
"Cows help the soil by stepping on it gently, and their poop—well, it’s a little gross, but it gives the earth nutrients so new plants can grow," Ronan says with a giggle, glancing at Pádraig’s wide eyes. "Everything in nature is connected. Even us." He tucks a daisy behind his brother’s ear, smiling as Pádraig tries to grab it.
Ronan closes his notebook, contentment shining in his eyes. "One day, Pádraig, when you’re big enough, we’ll plant wildflowers together for the cows and for all the creatures who call this meadow home," he whispers, voice full of hope. Pádraig laughs—a bubbling, joyful sound that echoes across the field.
Ronan carries Pádraig close, their hearts full from the day’s adventure. "We’ll always look after nature, won’t we, Pádraig? No matter how big we get," he says softly. Together, the brothers leave the meadow, already dreaming of tomorrow’s discoveries.
