David, a shy eight-year-old with tousled brown hair, sat cross-legged on a picnic blanket. Beside him, his loyal golden retriever, Biscuit, wagged his tail gently, eyes fixed on the book in David’s hands.
"I wish I could read this," David murmured, his fingers tracing the colorful illustrations. Biscuit nudged his arm, as if encouraging him to try.
David took a deep breath and sounded out the first word. Biscuit listened intently, his head tilted to one side.
"C...a...t," David said slowly, the letters forming into a word. Biscuit barked in approval, his tail thumping against the ground.
"Thanks, Biscuit," David smiled, feeling a spark of confidence ignite within him.
David continued to read, his voice growing steadier with each sentence. Biscuit was a patient listener, his unwavering presence a source of comfort.
"Look, Biscuit, it’s a story about a brave knight!" David exclaimed, his eyes wide with wonder as he turned the page.
"Woof," came Biscuit’s enthusiastic reply, as if urging him to read on.
David paused, noticing how the illustrations seemed to shimmer with life. His imagination soared, filling the gaps where words eluded him.
"It’s like magic, Biscuit," he whispered, feeling the stories leap off the page and into his heart.
"Woof," Biscuit agreed, his eyes sparkling with shared excitement.
David stumbled over a particularly tricky word, frustration creeping into his voice. Biscuit placed a reassuring paw on David’s knee, grounding him.
"I can do this," David declared, determination steeling his resolve. Taking a deep breath, he tackled the word again, victorious this time.
"Woof!" Biscuit barked, celebrating the triumph with a joyful jump.
David closed the book, a satisfied smile playing on his lips. Biscuit snuggled closer, resting his head on David’s lap.
"We did it, Biscuit," David said softly, feeling a newfound confidence in his ability to read.
"Woof," Biscuit replied, his eyes filled with pride for his young friend.
Together, under the fading light, David and Biscuit gazed at the horizon, ready to embrace the endless stories waiting to be discovered.
