Max awoke with a start, disoriented and shivering from the chill that clung to the air. His heart raced as he took in his surroundings—a cramped cage with rusted bars enclosing him. The wetsuit clung uncomfortably to his skin, and the electric collar around his neck buzzed ominously.
"Where am I?" he whispered hoarsely, the muzzle restricting his voice.
The basement door creaked open, casting a slice of harsh light into the gloom. A group of schoolchildren filed in, their faces twisted with cruel delight. Liam, the ringleader, stepped forward, a smirk playing on his lips.
"Look who finally woke up," he taunted.
Sophie, a girl known for her sharp wit and sharper tongue, chimed in with a mocking tone. "I think our pet needs a little training."
Max struggled against his bonds, his muscles straining in vain. The children's laughter echoed off the walls, a cacophony of malice. Ethan, a quiet boy with a penchant for cruelty, stepped closer and pressed a button on a remote.
Max jerked as the collar sent a jolt through his body, pain radiating from his neck.
"Dance for us!" Ethan sneered.
Through the haze of pain and humiliation, Max caught sight of a small window near the ceiling. It was dirty and cracked, but beyond it, he could see the world outside—a world he desperately longed to return to.
"I won't let them break me," he vowed silently, determination igniting within him.
Max began to formulate a plan, his mind working furiously. He watched the children’s movements, noted the times they came and went. Each detail was a piece of the puzzle he needed to solve to regain his freedom.
Grace, a girl with a soft spot for animals, hesitated as she glanced at Max.
"Maybe we shouldn't be so harsh..." she murmured, a flicker of doubt in her eyes.
The night brought silence to the basement, the only sound the rhythmic breathing of children asleep upstairs. Max seized the moment, using his strength to work the knots binding his wrists. With painstaking effort, he freed himself.
"It's now or never," he thought as he quietly approached the window, hoping to slip away unnoticed.
Max managed to pry open the window, the cool night air rushing in. He took one last look back at the basement, then climbed through, leaving the cage and his tormentors behind, determined to reclaim his life and his strength.
