Gary stood before the familiar doorstep, his breath visible in the frigid air. He hesitated, his hand hovering over the doorbell. Memories of laughter and arguments seemed to echo from the walls around him. Finally, he pressed the button, the chime echoing inside.
Jessica blinked as she recognized her brother. "Gary? What are you doing here?"
He offered a tentative smile, shivering slightly. "I need a place to stay for a while. Can we talk?"
Jessica led him inside, her expression wary. "It's been three years, Gary. Why now?"
He glanced around at the familiar surroundings, his voice tinged with regret. "I've been struggling, Jess. Things haven't been easy, and I thought... maybe it's time to mend our bridges."
Jessica sighed, her gaze softening as she studied her brother. "I missed you, you know. But you left without a word, and it hurt."
Gary nodded, his eyes filled with remorse. "I'm sorry, Jess. I was too proud to admit I needed help. But I'm here now, hoping we can start over."
"You can stay as long as you need, Gary," Jessica finally said, her voice gentle. "Let's take it one day at a time."
"Thank you," Gary replied, relief evident in his voice. "I promise, I won't let you down again."
Jessica reached out, placing her hand over her brother's. "Welcome home, Gary," she whispered, a small smile playing on her lips.
Gary squeezed her hand, his heart lighter than it had been in years. "It's good to be back," he murmured, grateful for the warmth and forgiveness surrounding him.
