Benji sat at the back of the classroom, his foot tapping incessantly against the chair leg. The teacher's voice faded into a low hum as his mind wandered. His gaze flitted to the window, where sunlight danced on the leaves outside, offering a brief escape from the chaos within.
"Benji, are you paying attention?" The teacher's voice broke through, and Benji snapped back to reality, nodding sheepishly. His classmates snickered, but he shrugged it off, used to the routine.
Seeking refuge from the noise and teasing, Benji wandered into the library during recess. Rows of books towered around him, a fortress of solitude. As he turned a corner, he almost bumped into Kayla, a girl with bright eyes and a mischievous grin.
"Watch it, speedster!" she laughed, stepping aside.
"Sorry," Benji mumbled, glancing at her stack of comic books. "You like comics?"
"Love them! They're like adventures on paper."
Benji and Kayla settled into a quiet nook, comics spread between them. The world outside faded as they shared their favourite stories and characters, discovering a mutual love for superheroes and fantastical worlds. "Sometimes I wish I had superpowers," Kayla mused, flipping through pages. "Like, I could just zoom away when things get rough." "Yeah, me too," Benji agreed. "Or maybe have a shield to block out all the noise."
Their friendship grew as they began crafting their own comic book. Benji sketched characters while Kayla spun tales. Their imaginations soared, filling the pages with heroes who overcame their struggles, just like them.
"This is gonna be amazing!" Kayla exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
"We can call it 'The Resilients,'" Benji suggested, feeling a newfound sense of purpose.
Despite their growing confidence, the real world still posed challenges. In the hallways, whispers and taunts followed them. But now, with Kayla by his side, Benji felt stronger.
"Ignore them," Kayla advised. "We have something they don't—our creativity and each other."
"Yeah, and we're unstoppable," Benji replied, a smile tugging at his lips.
The school year drew to a close, and their comic book was complete. It was a testament to their journey, filled with bravery and friendship. As they played on the sunlit playground, Benji and Kayla knew they had found something special—a bond that could weather any storm.
"We're real-life superheroes," Benji declared, watching the clouds drift by.
"And this is just the beginning," Kayla replied, her laughter echoing into the sky.
