Eli, a curious seven-year-old with tousled brown hair, tiptoed closer to the bassinet, his wide eyes filled with both excitement and uncertainty. He hesitated, clutching his favorite stuffed bear as soft coos drifted from the bundle inside. The gentle ticking of the clock marked the quiet hush of the house, broken only by the faint sound of a baby’s breath.
Eli reached out, his fingers trembling a little, and brushed the baby’s tiny hand. The newborn’s eyes blinked open, and for a moment, big brother and little sister simply stared at each other. "Hi, Ava. I’m Eli. I’m... I guess I’m your big brother now. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of you."
As Eli rocked the bassinet, Ava’s wails grew louder, her tiny fists flailing. Anxiety prickled at Eli’s chest as he glanced toward the kitchen, where their parents were busy. "Shh, shh, it’s okay, Ava. I’m here. Want Mr. Bunny?" He offered his beloved stuffed bear, hoping it might comfort her the way it always did for him.
Eli began to hum the tune his mom always sang when he was scared. Ava’s cries softened, her little hand wrapping tightly around his finger. Relief bloomed in Eli’s chest, warmth spreading as he rocked back and forth. "See? You like that song, too, huh?"
Eli sat close to the bassinet, holding his book so both he and Ava could see the colorful pictures. "Once upon a time, there was a brave little bunny who loved his family very much..." Ava’s eyelids drooped, her tiny breaths evening out as she drifted to sleep, her brother’s words wrapping around her like a gentle blanket.
Eli gazed down at his sleeping sister, his own eyes heavy but heart full. He reached into the bassinet and gently tucked Mr. Bunny beside her, giving her a soft kiss on the forehead. "Goodnight, Ava. I’ll always be here for you," he whispered, a promise strong as the bond only siblings know.
