Ethan stood on his tiptoes, carefully pouring milk into a bowl of cereal for his baby sister. He glanced at his mother, who was rushing to get ready for work. "I've got breakfast covered, Mom," he said with a determined smile. His mother paused, her eyes softening with gratitude.
Ethan crouched down, shaking a colorful rattle to amuse Lily, his baby sister. She giggled, her tiny hands reaching out to grab it. "You like that, don't you, Lily?" he chuckled, feeling a sense of pride in making her happy.
Ethan watched Lily slowly drift to sleep, her tiny fingers curled around his thumb. "I promise I'll always look after you," he whispered, feeling a wave of love and responsibility wash over him.
His mother stirred the sauce, smiling as Ethan carefully set the table. "You're such a big help, Ethan. I don't know what I'd do without you," she said, her voice filled with appreciation. "I'm just doing my part," he replied, feeling proud of his contributions.
Ethan opened the book, his voice soft and soothing as he read to Lily. She watched him with sleepy eyes, her thumb in her mouth. "And they all lived happily ever after," he concluded, kissing her forehead gently.
Ethan thought about the day and the small ways he had helped. "It's not always easy, but it's worth it," he mused, feeling a deep sense of fulfillment. His mother joined him, wrapping an arm around his shoulders. "You did great today, my little hero," she said, and Ethan beamed, ready to face another day.
