Johnny sat on the plush couch, his arms crossed tightly over his chest. His eyes were fixed on the doorway where his father stood, smiling and holding hands with a woman Johnny had only recently met. "I don't like her," he muttered under his breath, just loud enough for his father to hear.
"Johnny, this is Emily, and she's going to be spending more time with us," his father said gently, trying to sound reassuring. Emily, with her warm smile and kind eyes, looked hopeful as she extended a hand toward Johnny. But he only turned his gaze back to the fire, ignoring her gesture.
"Johnny, I understand this is hard for you," Emily began, her voice soft yet firm. Johnny finally met her eyes, his gaze a mixture of defiance and curiosity. "You don't know anything about me," he retorted, his voice tinged with frustration.
Johnny's father sighed and sat down beside him. "It's not about replacing your mom, Johnny. It's about finding happiness again," he said, his tone earnest. Johnny listened, his expression softening slightly as he considered his father's words.
Emily spoke again, her voice gentle. "I'm not here to take anyone's place. I just want to get to know you and be a part of your life," she said sincerely. Johnny nodded slowly, a small sign of acceptance beginning to form.
"Maybe we can try," Johnny said quietly, looking between his father and Emily. The three of them shared a tentative smile, the beginning of a new chapter unfolding in their lives.
