Corey, a young black father with a warm, inviting presence, walks alongside his son, Zion. At eight years old, Zion's eyes are wide with curiosity, matching the endless possibilities of the day that stretches before them.
"Dad, why do some people always follow what others do?" Zion asks, his small hand clutched in his father's.
"That's a great question, son. Let's talk about it," Corey replies with a smile.
Corey sits down, gesturing for Zion to join him. He takes a deep breath, gathering his thoughts.
"You see, Zion, being a leader means having the courage to make decisions based on what you believe is right, not just going along with what everyone else is doing," Corey explains.
Zion nods, his brow furrowed in concentration.
"Like when you decided to speak up in class last week, even though no one else did. That was leadership," Corey adds, pride evident in his voice.
Corey leans back, his eyes casting back in time.
"Let me tell you a story about when I was your age," Corey begins. "I was in a race at school, and all my friends took a shortcut. I wanted to win, but I realized that winning like that wouldn't feel right."
Zion listens intently, hanging on his father's every word.
"I chose to stick to the path, and although I didn't win that race, I learned something much more valuable—integrity," Corey concludes, his gaze steady on his son.
Zion contemplates his father's words, the gears turning in his young mind.
"So, being a leader means doing the right thing, even if it's hard?" he asks, seeking confirmation.
"Exactly," Corey affirms, squeezing his son's shoulder. "It's about thinking for yourself and standing by your choices."
Zion smiles, a newfound understanding shining in his eyes.
"Thank you, Dad. I want to be a leader, like you," he says earnestly.
Corey ruffles his son's hair affectionately.
"And you already are, Zion. You already are," Corey replies, as they stand and begin their walk back down the pier, hand in hand.
As they stroll along the pier, Corey and Zion share laughter and stories, each step reinforcing the lessons of the day. The city lights flicker on, illuminating their path, as father and son continue their journey, one lesson at a time.
