Henry stood at the edge of the sand, his eyes scanning the horizon. The sea breeze tousled his graying hair as he watched his daughter, Lila, paddling out on her surfboard. His heart swelled with pride and a touch of apprehension. "Ready to catch some waves, Lila?" he called out, his voice carrying over the soft roar of the ocean.
Lila turned back, her youthful exuberance reflected in her wide smile. "Always, Dad!" she replied, her voice bright with excitement.
Henry sat down on the sand, his gaze never leaving Lila. His thoughts drifted to the past, to the sacrifices he made as a single father. There were late nights filled with worry, early mornings of preparation, and countless moments of doubt. Yet, each moment was worth it for the bond they shared. "You've grown so much, Lila," he murmured to himself, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
Lila caught a wave, her form graceful as she rode it towards the shore. She glided to a stop near Henry, her cheeks flushed with joy. "Did you see that, Dad?" she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with delight.
Henry laughed, clapping his hands together. "You're a natural, just like your mom was," he said, his voice tinged with nostalgia and affection.
They sat together on the sand, the surfboards resting beside them. Henry wrapped an arm around Lila’s shoulders, pulling her close. "I miss her, Dad," she whispered, her voice soft.
Henry nodded, a lump forming in his throat. "I do too, every day. But she’s always with us, in every wave we catch and every sunset we watch," he replied, his voice steady with reassurance.
Lila leaned into Henry, feeling the warmth of his love and support. "Thanks for teaching me, Dad. Not just about surfing, but about everything," she said, her appreciation evident in her tone.
Henry smiled, his heart full. "And thank you for teaching me how to be a better father," he responded, his voice filled with gratitude.
They sat in silence, the bond between them stronger than any wave. The love of a father, Henry realized, was like the ocean—vast, enduring, and always there.
