Lila had just arrived home, nestled in her mother's arms. Sara looked down at her with a mixture of exhaustion and joy. Ethan, the eldest, was peering curiously over the edge of the couch, his eyes wide with wonder. Mia, with her favorite doll clutched tightly, stood hesitantly by her brother's side.
"Is she really going to stay with us forever?", Mia asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and apprehension.
"Yes, sweetheart," replied Sara, smiling softly. "Lila is your new sister."
Sara was trying to juggle the tasks of feeding Lila and helping the older kids with their homework. Ethan sat at the table, his brow furrowed in concentration over a math problem. Mia was coloring, her crayons scattered like a rainbow across the table.
"Mom, can you help me with this one?" Ethan asked, glancing up briefly from his workbook.
"Of course, honey, just give me one moment," Sara replied, gently rocking Lila in her arms.
Mia had decided to build a fort, which now stood proudly in the middle of the room, constructed from pillows and blankets. Ethan was helping, but Lila's cries from the bassinet interrupted their play.
"Why does she cry so much?" Mia asked, her brow furrowed in concern.
"She's just a baby, Mia. She'll get used to it here," Ethan reassured her, though he too seemed a bit unsure.
Sara sat on the couch, Lila asleep in her lap. Ethan and Mia were curled up on either side of her, their eyes drooping with sleepiness.
"I remember when it was just the three of us," Sara said softly, her voice filled with nostalgia. "Things were quieter, but now our hearts are fuller."
Ethan was leaning over Lila's crib, making silly faces that elicited baby giggles. Mia sat beside them, her doll forgotten as she watched her brother bond with their new sibling.
"I think she likes you, Ethan," Mia giggled, a newfound affection in her voice.
"I think I like her too," Ethan replied, grinning.
Sara watched her children play, her heart swelling with pride. Lila lay on a blanket, gurgling happily at the sight of her siblings.
"Look at them, growing together," Sara whispered to herself, feeling the warmth of love and family enveloping them all.
