Anna, a young mother with gentle eyes and worry etched on her face, sits cross-legged on the floor. Her son, Eli, six years old, clutches a stuffed bear and looks up at her, searching for answers.
"Mommy, why did a man with a gun come to my school?"
Anna takes a deep breath, pulling Eli closer. She strokes his hair, trying to summon the right words, her voice soft but steady.
"Sweetheart, sometimes people feel so sad or angry that they make choices that hurt others. It's not fair, and it's not your fault," she says, her gaze steady but her heart aching.
Eli frowns, squeezing his bear tighter. He looks at Anna, trying to understand.
"Was he mad at me? Did I do something wrong?"
"No, baby. You did nothing wrong. Sometimes things happen that we can't control, but there are grown-ups who work hard to keep you safe," Anna replies, her voice trembling at the edges.
Anna hums a quiet lullaby, rocking Eli gently. She wipes a tear from his cheek and rests her chin on his head.
"Will he come back?"
"No, the police made sure he won't come back. Your teachers and I will always do our best to protect you," she says, her words wrapping around him like a blanket.
Eli looks up at the glowing star, his eyes wide and hopeful. He snuggles closer, feeling safer with Anna by his side.
"It's okay to be scared, Eli. But remember, you are loved, and you are never alone,"
"Will you stay with me tonight?"
"Of course. I'll be right here," Anna promises, squeezing his hand.
Anna watches over Eli, her heart both heavy and hopeful. She whispers a silent vow to always protect him, no matter what storms may come.
Outside, the world remains uncertain, but within these walls, there is safety, tenderness, and love.
